An Evening with Alan Titchmarsh
Spend
a convivial evening in the company of gardener extraordinaire Alan
Titchmarsh, who will be chatting about his journey into broadcasting
and signing copies of his new memoir 'Knave of Spades'.
The event takes place on Friday September 25 at 7.30pm, in the
Yolande Patterson Hall at St Helen
& St Katharine, Faringdon Road.
Known to millions through his popular BBC TV programmes, 'Knave
of Spades' covers his television years, from his first few appearances
on Nationwide to hosting Gardeners World and Ground Force, finally
following in the footsteps of his gardening inspiration, Percy Thrower.
Alan is an excellent speaker, and of course he will be available
afterwards to sign copies of his book in person.
Tickets are £6 (with £5 redeemable against a
purchase of 'Knave of Spades' on the night) and includes a glass
of wine on arrival. Tickets for Mostly Booklovers are £4.
Contrary to several panicked calls this week, tickets are still
available from Mostly Books (but don't leave it too long!). Tel
01235 525880 or email books@mostly-books.co.uk
- or call into the shop of course.
(If you cannot make it on the night, signed copies can be reserved
- just let us know)
Janice Day - Getting It Off My Chest
Abingdon will be seeing a 'Splash of Pink' on October 10, as the
town goes pink in aid of Against Breast Cancer, a research based
charity that has recently located on the town's Science Park and
as part of breast cancer awareness month.
Mostly Books will be welcoming comedian and singer Janice Day
to sign copies of her books and donating all profits from sales
of her book to the charity.
Janice Day's book 'Getting it Off My Chest' is a moving, funny
and inspiring memoir. Diagnosed with breast cancer aged 39, Janice
Day not only survived cancer after rejecting chemotherapy, but turned
her life around, fulfilling her ambitions to launch a successful
career as a cabaret singer, stand-up comedian and writer.
Starting with a pink convoy around the town centre, Janice's appearance
is part of a fun-filled day that sees the market square the focus
for entertainments including belly dancers, Morris men, face painting,
Larkmead Performing Arts and a roundabout ride.
The exact timing of the signing is still to be confirmed, but will
most likely be late afternoon. The most recent information can be
found on our website: www.mostly-books.co.uk/events.
As always, signed copies can be reserved if you can't make it to
the event - email books@mostly-books.co.uk
Ros Badger - Homemade
A guided craft evening will be taking place on Tue Oct 13 at 7.30pm
with author, stylist and knitwear designer Ros
Badger - co-author of the sumptuous Homemade book.
In recent years there has been a real resurgence of interest in
home crafts and making decorations, gifts and clothes at home. From
running her own knitwear business, to designing and styling for
M&S, Ros Badger is perfectly placed to have you making your
own gorgeous things.
The event costs £6 (with £5 redeemable against
a copy of Homemade on the night). Places are extremely limited -
but we are currently planning another crafting event for later in
the year if the event sells out - please register your interest
as soon as possible.
Vampires or Nice Guys?
Have nice guys had their fun? They've had it all their own way
for a while, but there has been a recent return of the dark and
dangerous hero with 'Twilight' putting darker romance firmly at
the top of the bestseller lists.
'Vampires or Nice Guys - is chick lit dead?' will be the subject
under discussion at Mostly Books on Tuesday October 20 at 7.30pm
- a romantic evening close to Halloween rather than the traditional
Valentine's night when we shall be querying whether more romantic
writers will be swapping blood for bouquets and if black is really
the new pink.
Two romantic novelists, Victoria Connelly and Kate Harrison
- writers who are extremely good at putting the fun into romance
- will discuss what effect the 'Twilight phenomenon' is having on
romantic writing in general and if they're tempted to give their
heroes a darker edge.
Victoria Connelly is
a schoolteacher-turned-professional novelist whose latest book "Molly's
Millions" has been described as "a witty, feel-good [book]
with a dizzy-but-delightful florist heroine who - refreshingly -
cares more about her flowers and family than her footwear.".
She is also a contributor to 'Love Me, Loves me Not' an anthology
of the best romantic writing around to celebrate 50 years of the
Romantic Novelists Association.
Copies of the anthology will be available on the night.
Kate Harrison is one
of the undoubted hot new British romantic novelists, with her "Secret
Shopper" books having been both a critical and commercial success.
Her latest book "Secret Shopper Unwrapped" launches this
autumn.
This event will be hosted jointly with the newly established 'Abingdon
Writers' and group Chair Gabby Aquilina will be steering
everyone through the pitfalls of modern romance. Tickets are £3.
Reserve tickets by calling 01235 525880 or email books@mostly-books.co.uk.
mostly bookbrains literary quiz
Think you know your Dan Brown from your Brontes? Then why not pit
your literary wits against others to compete for the team prize
of Mostly Bookbrain of the Year?
We shall be hosting a literary quiz evening on Tuesday November
3 starting at 7.30pm at the Manor
School. Tickets are available for £2 in advance
(or £3 on the door) and teams can be a maximum of eight people.
There will be questions, there will be prizes, there will be a
bar. There will be a magnificent trophy and the accolade of being
crowned 'Mostly Bookbrains of the Year' for the winning team. And
the whole evening will raise money for Helen
& Douglas House (a very big thank you to Manor School, who
are kindly donating the venue for the evening for free).
It should be a high-octane literary evening - but mostly a great
deal of fun. Come as a team - but if you don't have a team, don't
worry - teams will be formed on the night.
There will also be a chance to find some new reads: discover
the bookswap table - bring along a book you'd like to share
and recommend (or one you couldn't stand and can't wait to see the
back of!) and grab something different.
To reserve your place, please email books@mostly-books.co.uk
or phone 01235 525880.
Foodie day at Mostly Books
On Saturday Nov 7 Mostly Books will be the setting for a tasting
session with a difference. Local authors with cookery titles out
this Christmas will be available to talk about their books and answer
questions. There will even be a chance to taste some of the recipes
in their books.
Authors will include Adriana Rabinovich, author of The
Gluten-free Cookbook for Kids. Adriana's own daughter was diagnosed
with Coeliac's disease when she was just 18 months old, and Adriana
- a trained chef who used to run her own bakery - quickly discovered
just how challenging it can be to prepare children's food when regular
pizza, pasta, bread and biscuits are off the menu.
Written from her own experience, Adriana covers all the problems
parents are likely to encounter - with suggestions for lunchboxes
and children's parties and also how to teach your children what
they can and can't eat.
Other authors on the day are to be confirmed. So if you have questions
for our authors come along. And if you are planning on giving a
cookbook for a gift, why not buy local?
An Evening with Susan Hill
Susan Hill is probably
best known for her book The Woman in Black, a ghost story
that was turned into a stage play and is still running.
She has been an acclaimed novelist since publishing her first book
written while still in the sixth form in Coventry. Her early years
in Scarborough provided the inspiration for much of her early work.
She won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1971 for I'm the King of
the Castle.
Her latest book, however, is not a novel. It is a book about reading,
titled 'Howards End is on the Landing' - a memoir of rediscovered
pleasures and memories from revisiting books she owns. A book for
booklovers - by a booklover (dare we say the ideal present for the
booklover in everyone's life?!) - Susan will be at Mostly Books
on Friday, November 20th at 7.30pm. We know Susan has lots of fans
in Abingdon, so please book and reserve early to avoid disappointment.
Tickets will be £5 (£3 Mostly Booklovers)
- with £2 off a copy of the book on the night - and can be
reserved by emailing books@mostly-books.co.uk
or calling 01235 525880.
Coming Soon
We have at least three other events which we are tantalisingly
close to finalising, including a Christmas craft event and the return

also plan an email update in the next few weeks.

New In!
In the past two weeks, we've had some new (and totally gorgeous)
things come into the shop, including Penguin Notebooks, some fab
new mugs (including the iconic 'Keep Calm and Carry On'), and new
ranges of cards.
And here's a few recommends from books we've discovered - or coming
out soon:
Nicki recommends: Her Fearful Symmetry, £18.99
Forget Dan Brown, Audrey Niffenegger's follow-up to The Time
Traveller's Wife is the real literary event of the year. Pre-order
before the launch date of Oct 1st for a great offer off the RRP
Alison recommends: Bumper Book of Nature, £17.99
This is a truly wonderful book to get kids (and this adult) fired-up
about getting outdoors and having fun with nature. Whether it's
organising a snail race, building a den or helping hedgehogs - this
book is a joy, and we love it.
Mark recommends: 59 seconds, £12.99
Quirkology author Professor Wiseman has written this gem
of a book, using a combination of hard science, psychology and proper
research to sharpen up your thinking and help you achieve your goals.
And he exposes a few myths from the self-help industry along the
way..
