2008 Events | Past Events

We've run many events since we opened in July 2006 - this page details some of the best events that have taken place at the shop - and elsewhere in Abingdon.

Sophie Grigson - Nov 2006

This was our first major event at the shop after opening, and we probably broke all kinds of health and safety rules to welcome almost 50 people to listen to bestselling cookery writer Sophie Grigson talk about her then latest book Vegetables.

David Melling - April 2007

David is Abingdon's very own bestselling children's author. He is an incredible gifted illustrator, and his highly books stories have a wonderful dynamism thanks to his drawings.

We've done several events with David since we've opened - his special talent is getting the kids involved to bring their own artistic talent to the fore.

Korky Paul - June 2007

Korky describes himself as the World's Greatest Portrait Artist, and after this tour-de-force in the Mostly Books Courtyard Garden on about the only hot Saturday last Summer, we have to agree. Korky is simply brilliant.

Sam Jordison - Dec 2006 & 2007

The first author to do two events at Mostly Books, we're now thinking of making it a formal annual occasion. Sam is a journalist (a regular contributor to the Guardian) and author of a number of weird and wacky books on everything from Crap Towns to Bad Dates.

In December 2007, his visit sparked plenty of local controversy (well, sort of).

Romantic Novelists Events - Jan/Feb 2007

We ran a series of four events under the title Coffee & Light Reading in the run up to Valentine's Day 2007.

A number of authors from the Romantic Novelists Association (RNA) presented topics on Books & Lovers, Love & War, Love in The Third Age and Love and Gardens.

The events were held during the morning in the shop, with coffee and cake on hand.

Many other authors have graced Mostly Books since we've opened. Here are a few of our best events:

 

Children's Events

We do storytimes every Thursday at 2pm, but we've done other storytelling events, a pirates and ballerinas funday, and even a Charlie & Lola day when we made a huge mobile for the Children's Room.

Events Outside the Shop

We have run bookstalls and signings at schools, theatres - and even in the middle of an airfield.

The Children's Food Festival took place in 2007. We did signings with Raymond Blanc, Sophie Grigson, Annabel Karmel, Prue Leith, Nora Sands and many others. It was exhausting, it was utterly insane - but we survived


They-Shouldn't-Do-Them-in-a-Bookshop Events

They said we were crazy, but we did them just the same. We've done craft events, flower arranging, play reading and wine tasting. There's usually a book link in there somewhere if you look hard enough!
